NEW Port Theatre Company is bringing Dolly Parton’s hit comedy 9 to 5 The Musical to Port Glasgow next month, just weeks after the death of the country music legend who wrote its songs.
The show runs from Wednesday 14 October to Friday 16 October, at 7.30pm, at Port Glasgow Community Campus.
Based on the 1980 film, the musical follows three overworked colleagues, Violet, Judy and Doralee, who reach breaking point with their sexist, lying boss and hatch a plan to turn the tables. Packed with Parton’s music and lyrics, including the famous title song, it’s a hilarious and heartfelt story about friendship, standing up for yourself and taking control of your own life.
David Whiteside, chairperson, said the company’s production had taken on a special meaning following singer’s passing in August. “When we chose 9 to 5, we never imagined we’d be performing it after losing Dolly,” he said.
“It’s made everyone even more determined to do her proud. She wrote this show with so much humour and warmth, and her songs are all about lifting people up. We hope audiences will come along, have a brilliant night out, and celebrate everything she gave the world.”
