Inverclyde Now Logo P1 Powerboat Event Won’t Be Back At Greenock In 2018

P1 Superstock powerboat racing will not be returning to Greenock in 2018 as the promoters have decided that there will be no UK events next year.

The Clyde has hosted the P1 Scottish Grand Prix of the Sea for the past two summers and Inverclyde councillors last week agreed to finance a third year.

However promoter P1 today said that, for the first time since the SuperStock series was launched in the UK in 2011, there will be no racing on British waters next year.

Instead, P1 is focusing its efforts on the USA championship and developing the sport in Asia.

UK Managing Director, Robert Wicks, said: “P1 SuperStock has enjoyed seven great years in the UK but our focus needs to switch to new markets as the business evolves.

“The ongoing uncertainty in offshore powerboat racing in the UK has also contributed to this decision.”

The £216,000 cost of the Greenock event was to have been split equally between Inverclyde Council and regeneration company Riverside Inverclyde.

It’s estimated this year’s two-day event at the Esplanade in June attracted 30,000 spectators.

Council officials said the economic impact for the area was valued at around £2.5million. This is based on the Inverclyde profile being raised through television and other media coverage and spending on accommodation, hospitality and by spectators.
