ROADS officials have admitted that the altered lay out of West Blackhall Street makes it more difficult for motorists to drive around the town centre to find parking.

Councillors have agreed that changing the direction of travel on one-way side streets be considered as a solution.
The makeover of West Blackhall Street that was completed last year included making it one-way for its entire length, traffic going from east to west.
A report by officials stated: “The new configuration of West Blackhall Street has impacted the ability to circle round to find a parking space and it is also difficult to access the off-street car parks on West Stewart Street and Jamaica Street from West Blackhall Street.
“It would be possible to either turn Argyll Street or Nicolson Street one-way towards West Blackhall Street and turn Jamacia Street one-way away from West Blackhall Street to Union Street to address improved traffic flow and access to parking.

“To achieve this however, additional parking restrictions would be required on Union Street to facilitate the required visibility splays. Additional traffic planning will be required prior to making the decision on Nicolson Street or Argyll Street, due to the number of pedestrian interactions at Nicolson Street.”
Inverclyde’s environment and regeneration committee agreed that a more detailed report be brought back about the proposal.
Various other measures were agreed in an effort to improve parking.
