MOTORISTS Warned Of 20mph Limit Starting On 1,000 Inverclyde Roads

27 April, 2026 | Local

NEW 20mph speed limits have been introduced from today on more than 1,000 Inverclyde roads.

The changes in residential areas have been implemented by Inverclyde Council in line with the national 20mph strategy, with support from Transport Scotland.

Transport Scotland has also introduced 20mph speed limits on parts of the A78 in Greenock and Wemyss Bay.

Most main roads, such as Eldon Street, Drumfrochar Road and the A8, have remained at the current 30mph or 40mph speed limits.

A map with full details of roads included in the 20mph rollout, as well as roads that are unaffected, is available on the Inverclyde Council website.

In line with Transport Scotland guidance, the 20mph speed limits are initially being introduced using temporary traffic regulation orders (TTROs) to allow for the scheme to be tried and tested, monitored, and to take into account feedback from road users and stakeholders.

Following an evaluation period, the intention is to introduce permanent speed limit orders (SLO) on roads as appropriate and further consultation would be required at that stage.
