ENERGY Developer ‘Surprised’ At Planners’ Opposition To £30Million Project

THE developer behind the plan for a massive renewable energy project near Port Glasgow is “disappointed and surprised” that it is being recommended for refusal.

Renewco Power want to build a 25-megawatt solar photovoltaic (PV) array, with around 700 panels, and a 24.9-megawatt battery energy storage system (BESS) at Devol Moor.

Inverclyde Council’s planning department is recommending that councillors refuse planning permission for the £30million Knocknair Renewable Energy Park because of the effect it would have on the green belt.

Councillors on Inverclyde Planning Board are due to consider the proposal on Wednesday.

Richard Koiak, chief development officer at Renewco Power, said: “We are disappointed and surprised by the recommendation from Inverclyde Council’s planning department particularly given the very positive and productive discussions we’ve had with officers to date.

“Our Knocknair Renewable Energy Park represents a £30 million investment, which could provide 50 local jobs during construction and operation, £1.6million in business rates and generate £6.3million for local businesses. The project will provide 25 megawatts of clean energy, enough to power the equivalent of 7,500 homes annually, which equates to every single home in Port Glasgow. We have committed to providing £11,250 per year for community benefit, to deliver direct economic and social benefits to the local area.

“As the costs of fossil fuels rise across the world and increase the burden of the cost of living, this project will make a significant contribution to support Scotland’s transition to net zero and reduce our reliance on imported oil and gas to power our homes and businesses. The project has been identified by the UK’s National Energy System Operator as a priority project, meeting a need for renewable energy both in the west coast of Scotland and across the UK.

“The project has an overwhelming level of support from the local community with over 30 letters of support from local residents, businesses and community organisations.

“Although we are disappointed in the recommendation, particularly in light of the initial very constructive discussions with the council and there having been no formal committee site visit, we believe we have put forward a robust planning case for this project that provides value to the local area. Knocknair Renewable Energy Park is a project with local support that can provide jobs, investment and energy security to Port Glasgow and Inverclyde.”
