DEMOLITION Proposed For Homeless Centre Following Closure

15 July, 2026 | Local

THE Inverclyde Centre homeless facility has fully closed following completion of the move to community-based temporary accommodation.

The building on Dalrymple Street, Greenock, has been officially handed over to Inverclyde Council by the local health and social care partnership.

The intention is to knock down the premises with the site retained. No decision has been taken on its future use.

It’s expected that demolition work will only take place upon completion of the major Central Greenock roadworks project.

Temporary furnished flats are now provided for those experiencing homelessness in Inverclyde, with 99 properties available.

The Inverclyde Centre opened in 1944 and had space for up to 24 people, but the model of emergency accommodation in a communal setting has been identified as being out of step with national policy, local strategic ambitions and best practice in homelessness services.

Challenges such as anti-social behaviour, risks to vulnerable groups and staff and trauma exposure were key factors driving the change of approach, alongside feedback from staff and service users.
