MORTON in the Community is celebrating a £157,000 National Lottery Heritage Fund grant to deliver Mon eh Ton, a ground-breaking project looking at Morton Football Club’s 150-year legacy.

The two-year project will explore and showcase the social and cultural impact of Morton FC through a mix of digital innovation, community participation, and heritage education.

One of the key features of Mon eh Ton will be the use of virtual and augmented reality technology to bring the club’s history to life for elderly residents in care homes, helping to foster a sense of nostalgia, connection, and community pride. The project will also include:

— Heritage training sessions led by professional researchers, teaching participants how to explore and interpret historical club archives

— The recruitment of volunteers to uncover, document and share stories from the club’s past

— The development of a dedicated digital platform to showcase the project’s findings

— A variety of intergenerational activities designed to bring young and older people together to share in the club’s heritage

— The hiring of a part-time heritage co-ordinator and volunteer co-ordinator to lead and support project delivery

— The creation of a bespoke ‘heritage ball’ as a lasting, symbolic representation of Morton FC’s legacy

Brian McLaughlin, chief executive, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to receive this support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Mon eh Ton is about more than just football — it’s about identity, memory, and connection. Morton Football Club has played a major role in the life of Inverclyde and its people, and this project gives us a chance to honour that legacy in exciting, meaningful ways.”
