WANDERERS Holding First Rugby 7s Tournament For Seven Years

4 April, 2024 | Sport

GREENOCK Wanderers next month host their rugby 7s tournament for the first time since 2017.

It will take place on Saturday 4 May, with the first match kicking off at Fort Matilda at 1pm. Bar and club facilities will be open from 11am.

The tournament comes at end of celebrations for the club’s 150th anniversary season.

‘Sevens’ rugby first came to Fort Matilda in 1948 and over the years established itself as a firm favourite on the 7’s circuit.

The first winners were Kelvinside West, and since then the Wanderers have witnessed many great tournaments and numerous worthy winners, who include George Herriot’s FP, Royal High FP, Ayr and a fine Edinburgh Wanderers’ side that won a hat-trick of titles between 1960 and 1962 to name but a few.

The Greenock Wanderers team have also won the tournament on six occasions, firstly in 1950 then again in 1964, 1981 and 1997, with back-to-back wins in 2013 and 2014.
