TENNIS — Greenock And District Championship Final Results
INVERCLYDE’S top tennis players battled it out at the local championship finals in difficult conditions.
Despite wet and windy weather, all the Greenock and District matches were finished apart from the mixed doubles final which will be played later this week.
Craig Williams
Craig Williams and Eilidh McLaughlin both retained their singles titles. Top seed Craig beat second seed Calum Roberts 6-3, 6-3 in a match hampered by the conditions, with the tennis balls very heavy and top spin not possible.
“It was a tough match in brutal conditions,” said Craig, “I had to battle hard in the conditions and am glad to have got through to win the match.”
Calum said: “The poor weather just didn’t suit my game and as soon as I knew what the weather was going to be like, I knew I would be up against it.”
Eilidh McLaughlin
Diane Fung
Eilidh had a more comfortable defence of her title beating Diane Fung 6-2, 6-2 while Callum Gerrard and Diane Fung retained their veterans’ mixed doubles title.
Jim Lyon
In the veteran men’s singles, two long-term campaigners and past winners Jim Lyon and Callum Gerrard met each other again, this time with Jim winning 6-2, 6-1.
