INVERCLYDE Scouts have been saddened to learn of the recent passing of Bill Lightfoot, one of the founders of a successful local troop.

Bill and his late wife May, along with Ian and Iris Canning were instrumental in setting up the 10th Scout troop and Beaver colony in September 1982.

Bill, who was always known as ”Skipper”, took the Scouts on many hikes and camping trips. These included visits to Ireland, Lochgoilhead, Everton, Auchengillan and Millport.

One of the many camp activities organised by Skipper Bill was “How many Scouts can you squeeze into a public phone box in Millport?” The most they managed was 17. The Scouts at the time wondered if this was a world record.

Under the leadership of Bill, the group saw hundreds of young people and adults pass through its doors. Many have returned bringing their own families with them.

Bill finally stood down in 1994 (but came back for a brief time as Cub Leader in the late 1990’s)

Greenock and District Scouts, and the 10th Group in particular, offer their sympathy and prayers to Bill’s sons Derek and Christopher and all their family at this time.

Bill’s funeral will be on Thursday 2 July at noon at Greenock Crematorium.
