EDUCATION bosses are planning to ask for public views on a proposal to reduce pre-five provision in Greenock’s East End.
Inverclyde Council officials say there are more spaces available for youngsters in the area than are needed.
Total potential capacity in the area is 168, with 43 potential spaces still available in 2025/2026.
A report to councillors states: “Officers have identified that there is the potential to close one facility and an initial desktop exercise has identified that this would most likely be King’s Oak nursery class.

“The closure of any provision will undoubtedly be emotive, and no closure can take place without statutory consultation. Parents of children attending the provision will want assurances of continuity and this all has to be factored into the next steps.
“The purpose of any consultation will be to ensure that the decisions taken are to the benefits of children and families. However, taking into account the wider financial pressures on the education services and the Council it does not make fiscal sense to have an over-provision of service in an area.”
Before carrying out statutory consultation officials want permission to undertake pre-consultation. The report states: “If agreement is given, then the consultation process would take place over the academic years 2025/26 and 2026/27, with a final decision coming into effect for August 2027.”
