AN Inverclyde brass band is holding a concert in aid of the Beatson charity after one of its players underwent treatment for cancer.
Brass Sounds Inverclyde, along with other local groups Inverclyde Scratch Choir and The Sea Shanty Men, will perform on Saturday 17 May at Westburn Church, Nelson Street, Greenock
Band manager Lesley Crumlish said: “Our principal cornet player Alistair McCorkell jnr was diagnosed last year with cancer in his neck and, following surgery, required 30 doses of radiotherapy and travelled up to the Beatson for 30 days. There he saw firsthand the amazing work they do. His treatment finished in January and he is now in recovery.”
She added: “So many people in Inverclyde have used the Beatson and, as a band, we like to do things for the community, so Alistair suggested we do a concert. Unfortunately he is unable to play at the moment but he will be speaking at the event about his personal experience of the Beatson and there will also be a representative from the Beatson speaking as well.

“Shirley our conductor, Alistair’s sister, is also the conductor (and co-founder with Yvonne Lyon) of Inverclyde Scratch choir so we thought it would be good to join forces with them again like we did with our successful Christmas Concert. Some of the band also sing with them and one member sings with the Sea Shanty Men as well.
“Shirley has been very busy getting the band and choir ready, choosing the programme with care and attention, with Yvonne working away in the background as well making sure the choir has practice music to listen to and organising the tickets and posters etc.
“We hope to raise the roof at Westburn Church to a full house raising lots for this very worthwhile charity.”
Tickets are available online, at the door or via the QR code on the poster on this page.
