AMBITIOUS plans have been drawn up to restore the historic Mariners’ Home building in the West End of Greenock, and develop new housing in parts of the grounds.
Proposals have been lodged with Inverclyde Council planners by developer Bridgend Property Limited and Nicholson McShane Architects (NMA).
The developers say a “carefully integrated high-quality” housing development is proposed.
The A-listed building, which has lain vacant since March 2021, would be converted into flats, preserving key architectural features.
Flanking the historic structure, would be new residential buildings.
Public consultation on the plans will commence soon, with members of the public encouraged to air their views in advance of a formal planning application later this year.
NMA director Paul McShane said: “This project stems from the need to save the A-listed Mariners’ Home for posterity. Historical buildings are the anchor points of a community’s identity, but to survive, they need viable futures.”
Fellow director Douglas Nicholson said: “By pairing the sensitive restoration of the Mariners’ with sympathetically designed and scaled modern housing, we are safeguarding the Mariners’ for future generations whilst contributing to the vibrant, multi-generational neighbourhood that is Greenock’s West End.
Gary Singh, managing director of Bridgend Property Limited, said “We’re delighted to bring this exciting project to the town and to give something back to the community. Public access to the Mariners’ grounds will be improved so that the building can be admired up close. Most local people have only seen the building from afar.”
