THE winners have been announced in the annual competition to find Inverclyde’s sports personalities.

An awards event took place in Greenock Town Hall last night with recognition for competitiors in a range of sports including swimming, tennis, football, backhold wrestling, karate and netball.

The full list of winners:

Senior Sports Personality of the Year -– Paul Monaghan, athletics

Junior Sports Personality of the Year -– Sophie Rorrison, backhold wrestling

Disabled Sports Personality of the Year — Isaac Dunning, swimming

Team of the Year -– Fort Matilda Tennis Club gents’ first team

School Team of the Year -– Notre Dame High School S1 netball team

Club of the Year –- St Andrew’s Boys Club, football

Coach of the Year -– Jim Boyland, multi-sports

Young Volunteer of the Year -– Elisha Hope, multi-sports

Adult Volunteer of the Year –- Bill Haggerty, karate.

The evening was compered by TV presenter Jean Johansson, aided by Your Radio’s Mike McLean. A highlight of the evening was a short talk from a previous winner of the Young Volunteer of the Year award, James Barbour, who showed how important sport can be in shaping lives and increasing confidence.

BBC football pundit Chick Young was on hand to keep the audience entertained while the Greenock Rock choir performed a number of songs to get feet tapping and hands clapping.

For the organisers, Chris Jewell said: “This was another great night with worthy winners, a great atmosphere and good food, all combining to recognise and acknowledge the place sport has in our lives but also the wealth of sporting talent locally. We are very grateful to our sponsors and those who organise these awards.’

The net proceeds of the awards evening will be returned to the community by providing grants to aspiring local athletes across all sports as they try to break through into national and international competitions.

The awards were sponsored by West College Scotland, Inverclyde Council, Inverclyde Leisure, the Oak Mall Shopping Centre, Riverside Inverclyde, Morton in the Community, VA Business Solutions, Ogilvie Homes, sportscotland, Toast Promotional Products and O2 Greenock.
