A COMMUNITY group has abandoned plans to use a Greenock West End site as an organic allotment but is still pursuing proposals for another site in the town.

Permallot entered talks with Inverclyde Council over leasing a vacant site at Caddlehill Street and the suggestion went out to consultation.

A report updating councillors states: “Permallot recently approached Council officers to ask if they could use the land for organic allotments within a permaculture setting, including classes for educational and community purposes.

“During discussions between the group and local residents it became apparent to Permallot that the local community was not supportive of its plans and so Permallot’s lead contact has advised council officers that the group wish to pull out of any negotiations in relation to Caddlehill Street.”

Instead Permallot say they will concentrate their efforts on Papermill Road, Greenock, between Whinhill School and houses at Overton.

The 1.3-hectare site would have 18 to 30 allotment plots, two polytunnels, chickens, a composting area and a multi-purpose shed for classes and meetings.

Under planning legislation, further consultation is required regarding that proposal as parts of the site are considered open space.
