Inverclyde Now Logo WELCOME To Douglas Rae Road, Cappielow

THE memory of former Morton chairman Douglas Rae is living on after signs went up today at the high profile road that has been named after him, just yards from the football club’s stadium.

Inverclyde councillors decided at the end of August to call the James Watt Dock entrance lanes beside the A8 in Greenock Douglas Rae Road.

Contractors installed the new name plates this afternoon.

Businessman Mr Rae (87) died in June, shortly after stepping down as chairman of the club he supported all his life.

Council officials had originally suggested calling the road, which is just across from Cappielow, Great Harbour Way.

A council spokesman said a the time: “Normally the council doesn’t name roads after individuals but an exception was made in this case given Mr Rae’s contribution to Inverclyde and the fact Cappielow is so nearby.”

Work is due to start on a major housing development by River Clyde Homes beside the dock road.
