POLICE searching for the crew of a tugboat which sank at Greenock have confirmed that two bodies have been found.

Formal identification has yet to take place, however the next of kin of both crew members who had been reported missing have been made aware.

Chief Inspector Damian Kane, local area commander, said: “Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the men at this difficult time and I would ask that their privacy is respected.

“I would like to thank the local community for their patience and support as searches were ongoing and as we continue to carry out our enquiries.”

The bodies were found off Custom House Quay around 1.40pm today.

Tugboat Biter some years ago

Emergency services rushed to the East India Harbour area around 3.30pm on Friday when Clyde Marine tugboat Biter capsized as it was escorting cruise vessel Hebridean Princess, along with tugboat Bruiser.

A Coastguard helicopter, lifeboat and police vessels were called to the scene and later divers arrived.

A large area around the harbour was sealed off by police.
