SUNSET Sailing For Waverley’s Clyde Season Finale

12 August, 2025 | Local

THE Paddle Steamer Preservation Society’s Scottish Branch is inviting passengers to step aboard paddle steamer Waverley for a special one-off evening sunset sailing.

The trip on Wednesday 20 August will mark the final week of the vessel’s 2025 Clyde summer season.

Departing Dunoon at 6pm, Greenock at 7pm, Kilcreggan at 7:25pm or by coach connection from Helensburgh at 6:30pm, the ship will steam up Loch Long and Loch Goil, closely mirroring the route the historic steamship was built to serve, before viewing the picturesque village of Lochgoilhead. The evening will feature live music from a local band in the Jeanie Deans lounge, alongside full onboard catering.

All proceeds from the sailing will go directly towards the Society’s winter maintenance projects and investment in Waverley’s continued operation.

Allan Smith, chairman for the Scottish Branch of the Society, said: “This is a truly unique cruise, and tickets are now on sale, giving locals, visitors, and supporters the chance to enjoy some of the most spectacular scenery on the Clyde from the decks of the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer.

“The evening will be made even more memorable with live music and full onboard catering. Importantly, this sailing will help us raise the vital funds needed to support Waverley, with every ticket contributing directly to her upkeep and winter maintenance projects.”

Waverley’s 2025 season has already seen passenger numbers exceeding figures for this point in previous seasons. Allan continued: “The Paddle Steamer Preservation Society has provided vital support for many projects onboard Waverley, from maintaining her unique steam engine to preserving her period interior. This evening cruise will play a key role in generating the funds that make this possible.

“I am proud that the Society can support this sailing, which not only gives the Clyde coast communities the opportunity to enjoy surrounding scenery, but also helps ensure Waverley can continue operating for future generations.”

Tickets are £37 for adults and just £1 for children aged five to 16. They can be booked at waverleyexcursions.co.uk by calling 0141 243 2224, or purchased on board on the night.
