SHIPYARD Apologises Over Further Months-Long Ferry Delay

13 May, 2025 | Local

FERGUSON Marine shipyard in Port Glasgow have announced a further delay and cost increase for ferry MV Glen Rosa.

It is now estimated the CalMac vessel will be “substantially complete” by the first quarter of 2026 with the aim to achieve full sign-off and delivery in the second quarter of 2026.

The previous schedule was that it would be delivered by the end of September this year. When ordered, it was supposed to be complete by July 2018.

The total forecast cost to complete the ferry has increased from £150million to £172.5million with an additional £12.5million risk contingency, giving a maximum expected cost of £185million.

The yard said that new chief executive Graeme Thomson has spent time studying the delivery plans, working with Ferguson Marine’s finance and project management teams to challenge the assumptions on key milestones, critical paths, resource hours and costs to ensure the assessments are robust and well-informed with an appropriate level of risk attached.

Mr Thomson said: “This is not the announcement we wanted to be making at this stage and cannot overstate our understanding of the importance of providing realistic handover schedules to support CalMac to provide a more reliable and robust service to the communities it serves.

“No one wants to see the swift delivery of MV Glen Rosa more than Ferguson Marine and we are committed to working hard to ensure the vessel is delivered within this window.

“We apologise unreservedly to islanders for this additional delay and want to assure everyone that we are working extremely hard to deliver a quality vessel that showcases the skill and experience of Clydebuilt ships. Once delivered, MV Glen Rosa will be transformative for our island communities.”
