FERGUSON Shipyard, Port Glasgow — which has been undergoing a £26million transformation — and Greenock Prison are among 32 Inverclyde venues and tours lined up for this year’s Doors Open Days.

The newly-refurbished Custom House, above, on Greenock’s waterfront and the heritage centre being developed at the former Gourock Municipal Buildings are also among highlights of the annual event which takes place on Saturday 9 September and Sunday 10 September.

There is also an extended programme of children’s activities on the Saturday including mock trials at Greenock Sheriff Court where children can take on the role of jurors. Actors from Greenock Players will play the parts of court staff, and youngsters can see Cinderella’s wicked stepmother on trial and decide if she’s guilty or not. There will be fairy tale-themed arts and crafts in the old Tobacco Warehouse, Haig Street.

Inverclyde Tourist Group is running a number of local bus and walking tours.

Among the other venues are the Waterfront Cinema, Greenock, where there will be behind-the-scenes tours; Greenock and Port Glasgow fire Stations; and the new St Patrick’s Primary School, Greenock. Various churches again feature in the programme, including Inverkip for the first time.

Not all venues are open both days. Full details on Doors Open Days website
