ROLLOUT Of 20mph Speed Limits To Start Across Inverclyde

19 December, 2025 | Local

WORK to implement a 20mph speed limit on most residential streets in Inverclyde starts next month.

Inverclyde Council has confirmed it will start putting up signage in relation to the changes in January.

The council is aiming to meet the Scottish Government’s National Strategy for 20mph, which aims to implement the safer speed limit across built-up areas in Scotland by the end of March 2026.

The strategy prioritises people over motor vehicles to improve road safety and encourage more walking, wheeling, and cycling in quieter, less congested neighbourhoods. It will also align Inverclyde with other towns and cities adopting similar measures, helping to reduce both the risk of accidents and the severity of injuries sustained.

The total number of Inverclyde roads where the speed limit will be reduced from 30mph to 20mph is 1,021, following comprehensive analysis of Inverclyde’s road network, assessed against fixed criteria set by Transport Scotland. A further 69 roads will retain a speed limit of 30mph.

Transport Scotland’s proposed route to implement the reduced speed limits is by the promotion of Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders (TTRO), followed by consultation to assess the success of the schemes to identify any changes and with final implementation through formal consultation and promotion of permanent Speed Limit Orders (SLOs).

On completion of the promotion of TTROs and the installation of the signs and road markings there will be a consultation to assess the success of the schemes. This will include traffic surveys in addition to public consultations.

Officials will evaluate any changes required and these will be implemented prior to the formal consultation and the promotion of the permanent Speed Limit Orders (SLOs). These SLOs will be split into five areas: Quarriers Village and Kilmacolm; Port Glasgow; Greenock; Gourock; Inverkip and Wemyss Bay, and will be subject to a further funding commitment from Transport Scotland for 2026/27 for the promotion of permanent SLOs and any changes to signs and road markings.

On completion of the SLOs, a traffic surveys and monitoring will be conducted to determine if any further measures are required.
