READER Talkback: A78 Flooding Is ‘Self-Inflicted’ Problem

15 December, 2025 | Local

FLOODING which led to the closure of the A78 between Greenock and Inverkip for much of the day on Sunday could have been avoided, argues Innes Nelson

[On Sunday] the A78 was closed because the grill at the culvert at Chrisswell Farm road end was blocked with leaves and small sticks.

This is a self-inflicted problem that has been caused by Transport Scotland reducing the size of the grills on the culvert which means that small sticks and leaves will not pass through the grill.

I feel sorry for the men who cleared it multiple times today and it simply chocked up again within minutes causing the water to keep flooding the road.

It is time that Transport Scotland replaced the grills with larger ones that will allow small debris to flow through to ensure that our transport links stay open when it rains.
