PLANNERS Decide Proposals For Brightening Up Harbourside Are Shipshape

DESIGNS for public realm improvements at a Greenock harbour have been approved.

The proposal to install benches, planters, seating bollards, musical instruments and telescopes at East India Harbour has been given the go-ahead by planning officials.

Active travel charity Sustrans Scotland has been working with the community to develop temporary ways of making the quayside more attractive and friendly to residents and visitors as part of their Pocket Place scheme.

The plans include turning an existing grass area at a former drydock into a coastal meadow with a willow dome structure.

Musical instruments would include pipe drums or rainbow bongos, bell chimes and a xylophone/metalophone.

Officials felt the changes would add interest to an “otherwise underutilised area”.

The measures will only be in place until more permanent development goes ahead; the site is being considered for a college campus.
