THE Royal West of Scotland Amateur Boat Club’s Tail o’ the Bank surfski/sea kayak races on the Clyde at Greenock attracted more than 40 competitors, some from far afield.

The main competition was a 10-mile race comprising two loops of a triangular circuit from the Boat Club to the concrete perch on Rosneath Patch, then around the wreck of the Captayannis and back to the club. There was also a five-mile event which was one loop of the same circuit.

The winner of the Performance Class in the 10-mile race was Daniel Mathews from Wolverhampton Canoe club in a Revo surfski who completed the course in one hour, 26 minutes and 32 seconds.

The first female was Anita Stacey from Devon in an Epic surfski in a time of one hour, 48 minutes and seven seconds.

In the 10-mile sea kayak category, Colin Campbell from the Royal West finished in first place. Susan Smith from Drumchapel and Clydebank Kayak Club secured the trophy for fastest female.

Top spots in the five-mile event went to Royal West paddlers, Mark Gallacher and Sarah Burrows.

A special prize was awarded to Jamie Ramsay who completed the course despite having only recently taken up kayaking.

Safety cover was provided by boats from the local Sea Scouts, the Scouts, Tommy McGeachie and the club’s own rescue boat. Conditions were calm and the event passed without incident.

A full list of results will be published on the Royal West’s web-site at rwsabc.co.uk. The club offers kayaking, rowing, open water swimming and dinghy sailing.
