Inverclyde Now Logo NEW Coastal ‘Urban Village’ At Inverkip Could Have Up To 650 Houses

UP to 650 houses could be built at the Inverkip Power Station site, according to plans that have gone on show to the public.

Land owners Scottish Power want to build a new coastal urban village on the land between Inverkip and Wemyss Bay.

The housing capacity now being quoted is significantly lower than the 780 units proposed in a planning application submitted by Scottish Power in 2009.

As well as housing, the new masterplan for the site shows possible sites for a hotel, a pub/restaurant and leisure and retail developments.

Vehicle access would be via the existing road plus a new road and roundabout on the A78 at the north end of the site. There would be a pedestrian and cycle network including a new coastal path.

Woodland habitats would be kept “where possible” with development mainly taking place on land that had previously been built on.

Brueacre Burn would be enhanced to “create an attractive landscape feature.”

Display material produced by planning consultants Turley states: “The framework masterplan illustrates the distribution of a robust and sustainable development with potential for a range of living environments, with flexible house types and sizes envisaged, combined with some community, retail and commercial uses.

“Respecting the site’s natural and complex topography and its wide range of woodland habitats has been key to the development of a new masterplan, which also takes maximum advantage of the site’s fine views and sheltered location.

“It is a vision for the future that can deliver a place of quality and individuality.”

The initial proposals were being exhibited in Wemyss Bay Community Centre today (Monday) until 6pm and will be on show again on Wednesday at Inverkip Community Hub from 3 to 8pm.

The public exhibitions are part of the consultation process required before a planning application can be lodged under rules for major developments.
