The Active Schools Sports Coaching Academy is aimed at senior Inverclyde school pupils.

They will work over the next year towards achieving the National Progression Award SCQF Level 5 in Sports Coaching from Qualifications Scotland.

The course will include the young people will come together for training days as well as an overnight residential. They are expected to complete 10 hours of sports coaching outside at a cluster primary school or their own secondary school while being mentored and supervised by a member of the Inverclyde Active Schools/Sports Development team.

Coaches will select a specific sport to focus on which will include football, rugby, netball, athletics or generic multi-sports.

Councillor Jim Clocherty, convener of Inverclyde’s education and communities committee, said: “It was great to meet the young people at the launch of this coaching academy.

“They are motivated and engaged and it is clear they are passionate about sport and coaching young people. It is really heartening that the first year of the programme has got off to such a good start with over 30 signed up.

“I know the Active Schools team are looking forward to working with the group and I hope they have a great year.”
