BRASS Sounds Inverclyde is celebrating victory at a national contest.

The band triumphed in the Fourth Section of the Scottish Brass Band Championship at Perth Concert Hall on Sunday, under the baton of musical, director, Joshua Parkhill,

Brass Sounds Inverclyde came top out of a strong field of eight bands.

Performing set test-piece Argos, by Stephen Hodel, the players retained composure throughout their impressive performance, their first in two years following the disruption brought about by the covid-19 pandemic.

Further joy came when principal euphonium player, Isaac Parkhill, received the award for best instrumentalist following his sterling contribution.

The result means the band has qualified for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in Cheltenham in September, for which it will now embark on a fundraising drive, including an online appeal page.

A spokesperson said: “After the challenges of the past two years, it was fantastic to be back on stage at the Scottish Championships -– and to come home with the trophy was the icing on the cake.

“We’re really excited to be heading to the National Brass Band Championships later this year and look forward to representing Inverclyde and the Scottish banding scene in the Fourth Section contest.”

The band is hosting a family quiz night on Friday 13 May, at 7pm in the 68 Club, Port Glasgow, for which tickets are available.

Meanwhile, a concert is scheduled for 21 May in Ardgowan Square Evangelical Church, Greenock.
