YOUTH worker Paul Ross of Inverclyde Council has been nominated for a national award for success in helping young people at a Greenock school.

Paul is in the running for the Raising Attainment Award at the National Youth Work Awards 2019.

He has been working at Inverclyde Academy for 18 months to raise attendance and attainment among a targeted group of young people aged 12 to 18.

Head teacher Denise Crawford said: “The hard data speaks for itself! Exclusions are reduced, attendance is increased and engagement is off the scale. Pupils are now engaged in education right up to Sixth Year. We are closing the gap and a lot of this is down to Paul’s dedication.”

Working as part of a team, Paul has tailored a programme of exciting learning opportunities that are bringing enthusiasm and passion to disengaged youngsters and ultimately a brighter path to walk down in the future.

He is a member of the Community Learning and Development Team within Inverclyde Council which aims to help individuals and groups in their communities to achieve their life goals and tackle everyday issues in their lives through community-based learning and action.

Tim Frew, chief executive of YouthLink Scotland, said: “Over the last year we have seen some fantastic examples of youth work making an immense contribution to young people’s lives.

“In every part of Scotland, every day, thousands of youth workers, many of them volunteers, are supporting young people to follow their dreams and realise their potential, and Paul Ross is a great example of the positive impact youth work has.”

The award winners will be announced on Wednesday 13 March at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow.
