HOMELESS Centre To Be Knocked Down After Closure

THE Inverclyde Centre homeless facility will be demolished after it closes early next year.

Council officials have confirmed they plan to knock down the building on the A8 Dalrymple Street.

The centre is due to shut in January when a community-based approach to homelessness is introduced.

The Inverclyde Centre, which opened in 1944, has space for up to 24 people, but the model of emergency accommodation in a communal setting is now seen as being out of step with national policy, local strategic ambitions, and best practice in homelessness services.

A report updating Inverclyde councillors states: “It is considered outdated and not fit for purpose. By closing the centre, the number of temporary furnished flats in Inverclyde will increase.

“Accordingly, authority is sought to declare the Inverclyde Centre as surplus to requirements and to seek authority to demolish the building once full decommissioning has been achieved.

“The site will be levelled and seeded and will be retained as a potential site for consideration in connection with future heat network development.”
