THE only road into a Greenock housing estate was closed for much of the day after workmen broke a gas main.

Emergency services were called to Papermill Road this morning (Thursday) after a digger fractured a gas pipe.

The road — the only route into Overton — has remained closed all day while the pipe is repaired.

The Beith Road/Old Largs Road junction has also been closed. The incident happened near Whinhill Primary School which remained open.

An Inverclyde Council spokesman said: “We are monitoring the situation and will act according to advice from Scottish Gas, police and fire.”
