EYE Surgeon’s Charity Work Inspires New Young Citizens’ Award

26 March, 2022 | Local, Noticeboard

YOUNG people in Inverclyde are to be recognised for the positive difference they make to the area with the launch of the Dr SR Gupta MBE and The Rotary Club of Gourock Young Citizens’ Award.

During his career as an eye surgeon at Inverclyde Royal Hospital, Dr Gupta not only worked to improve local ophthalmic services, but also volunteered at eye camps in some of the most deprived countries in the world. He was recognised for his lifelong work with an MBE in 2018.

A spokesman for The Rotary Club of Gourock said: “In recognition of his incredible charitable efforts throughout his life, the Rotary Club of Gourock in conjunction with the Gupta Family are delighted to introduce the Dr SR Gupta MBE and Gourock Rotary Citizens’ Award.

“It is hoped this award will encourage the next generation of young people, aged nine to 24, to give back to their communities and inspire the future philanthropists of Inverclyde.”

“Those nominated do not have to be working on a Rotary project to be eligible.

What matters is that they will have made a positive difference which is recognised by a local Rotary club or organisation (for example, local authority, school, college, university, youth group, cadets) as worthy of a nomination; for example, they might be champions in their school or local community, young carers, fundraisers, volunteers or have shown courage in some way.”

All entries will be reviewed, and a shortlist drawn up before the winners are identified by a judging panel.

Every nominee will receive a personalised certificate from the Rotary Club of Gourock which will recognise the achievement they made that led to them being nominated.

The top five nominees will be put forward to the National Finals of the Rotary Young Citizens’ Award held in Birmingham to be adjudicated by Rotary International.
