INVERCLYDE’S league season in Western District Cricket Union Division Four gets underway this weekend with a home fixture against Bute County.

Pre-season training has been successful, and Inverclyde have been able to set up a Development XI to allow junior players to come through to senior cricket, with some of these players already pressing for a place in the league side.

The following players have been chosen to represent Inverclyde CC in the match on Saturday (11 May) which starts at 1pm: Gareth James (Capt), Stuart Callison, Dave Cooke, Christopher Dick, Cammy Gunn, Elizabeth McInnes, David Mudie, Douglas Pilkington, Paul Singh, Gareth Smith, Craig Watson, Frederick Smith, Bobby Stone.

In an early season 40-over friendly against a West of Scotland XI last weekend, Inverclyde’s Development side, Gourock Park, lost out in a close match by one wicket.

Batting first Inverclyde scored 161, with Captain David Thomson (34) and Gareth James opening the season with an 85 partnership. James retired on an undefeated 50 to allow important time at the crease for the rest of the team, with Chris Dick (18 not out) and Billy Hair (11 not out) adding some late runs.

Inverclyde’s opening bowlers Paul Singh and Dick bowled well to leave West at 23 for 3, but Khan (76) took the game away from the locals, and despite some tidy bowling and good fielding, the visitors passed the target with one wicket to spare.

Singh, Dick, James, and Hair all took wickets, while Elizabeth McInnes bowled an excellent line and length in her seven over spell taking 2 for 30.

Midweek training for juniors and seniors will take place this year on Tuesdays through the season from 6pm at Gourock Park.
