A PLANNING application has been submitted by Inverclyde Council to expand Knocknairshill Cemetery, Greenock.
The £1.6million project involves around 7,000 square metres of land to the east of the existing burial area.
Officials have been working for several years to come up with a solution to a shortage of cemetery capacity in the district.
The extension at the site off Kilmacolm Road would have around 740 lairs, some of which would have room for two or three interments.

The application is pending consideration by planners.
A previous council report stated that the extra space would be enough to serve the area for a decade.
The first phase of development at Knocknairshill started in the early 1990s and the fifth and, at that time, final phase was completed in 2012, giving a total of 3,400 lairs.
