COMMERCIAL Units Proposed For Disused Newspaper Accommodation

REDUNDANT space at the Greenock Telegraph building is set to be divided into business units.

Accommodation at the rear of the premises in Crawfurd Street would be split into seven units under the plan submitted on behalf of owners WBI Group.

Recladding would also take place and vehicular access would be changed from Hood Street to Clarence Street by knocking down a redundant single storey building.

A design statement submitted with the application states: “Due to changes in the way the newspaper is produced and distributed, the rear, portal-framed part of the building is no longer required for its original purpose.

“Our proposal seeks to bring a beneficial use to a redundant building, to improve the building visually and to relieve traffic congestion on Hood Street.

“It is a valuable contribution to satisfying demand for this type and scale of business unit within an area appropriately designated by the local authority, and it will contribute to the local economy.”

The application is pending assessment by Inverclyde planners.
