Inverclyde Now Logo CLOSURE Of Main Road Continues As Building Inspectors Wait For Calmer Weather

ROAD closures put in place at a busy Greenock roundabout after stonework fell from a building are set to continue until at least tomorrow (Thursday).

Masonry from The Albany restaurant and theatre was blown on to Inverkip Road at South Street roundabout during stormy weather at the weekend.

The A78 is closed between West Station and South Street roundabout and a stretch of Nelson Street, from Newton Street towards the roundabout is also shut.

Inverclyde Council stated: “The A78 Inverkip Road will be closed at South Street Roundabout at least until Thursday due to the risk of stonework falling from The Albany.

“We need to wait for the wind to drop before we can inspect it. Scotland Transerv is assisting us improve the traffic flow in the area.”

The Albany, which is in the former Orangefield Baptist Church, has remained open.

The venue stated: “A piece of the finial (decorative ornament at the top of the spire) has fallen down due to the high winds. This was well away from the main entrance….we are open as normal.”
