COMMUNITY campaigners hope to buy the Old West Kirk building in Greenock and turn it into a heritage and arts centre — but face a race against time.
The Church of Scotland have put the church on The Esplanade up for sale for offers over £125,000, with a closing date of 6 September set.
The A-listed building dates back to the 16th century and local groups have now got together to launch the Save The Old West Kirk campaign.
They state: “As the first Presbyterian church to be built after the Scottish Protestant Reformation, the Old West Kirk is an incredibly important building and must be saved from possible redevelopment.
“The Church of Scotland already have the for sale sign up, but we are a team of community groups who are hoping to raise the funds to buy the church and maintain it for the benefit of the community.
“We are looking to have the church kept as it is with minimal changes and have it as a centre for local heritage and arts.”
