CARE Inspectors Raise ‘Significant Concerns’ Over Choking And Restraint

11 May, 2026 | Local

A GREENOCK care home has been ordered to make improvements or risk losing its registration.

The Care Inspectorate wants action by 21 May over issues at Larkfield View Care Centre on Burns Road. Holmes Care Group Scotland Ltd has been served with an Improvement Notice. The centre has capacity for up to 90 residents and specialises in respite / short stay; dementia; nursing; and palliative / end-of-life care.

Management has been ordered to reduce the risk of a person choking by implementing measures such as appropriate nutrition and hydration support and always having enough sufficiently trained and skilled staff on duty to supervise meal service.

They are also to ensure that no service user is subject to restraint unless it is the only means of securing the welfare and safety of that or any other service user and there are exceptional circumstances. If any restraint is required it must be lawful, proportionate, and supported by robust assessment and consent processes.

The home has to be effectively led and managed at all times and must follow procedures for reporting any incidents to the Care Inspectorate and the Health and Social Care Partnership.

A Care Inspectorate spokesperson said: “An inspection has identified significant concerns about the quality of care experienced by residents.

“We understand this is a difficult and distressing time for residents, their families and staff at the service. However, our first priority is always the health and wellbeing of people.

“Because of our concerns we have issued an Improvement Notice. This sets out the significant improvements that must be made within a specified timeframe.

“We are in contact with and monitoring the service to follow up on the required improvements.”

The Care Inspectorate state: “Failure to demonstrate compliance with any one of the improvements within the required timescale may result in us proceeding to make a proposal to cancel registration.”

A spokesperson for Larkfield View Care Home said: “We take all feedback from the Care Inspectorate seriously and are working closely with Inverclyde Health and Social Care Partnership to review the areas of concern raised and to further strengthen the quality and consistency of the care we provide.

“Our management team remains available to support residents, family members and staff at this time, and a comprehensive improvement plan is in place, led by our regional operations manager and wider senior leadership team.

“Our priority is always the wellbeing of our residents, ensuring they receive safe, compassionate, and high-quality care in a setting where they feel valued and supported.”
