WORK is due to start at the end of June on a £2.5million berthing upgrade at the Western Ferries terminal at McInroy’s Point, Gourock.

The works involve replacement of the older berthing structure at McInroy’s Point and installation of a new 30-metre-long linkspan.

George Leslie Ltd, which won the contract following a competitive tender process earlier this year, will be responsible for the civil engineering works, whilst Arch Henderson has been appointed as consultant engineers to oversee delivery. These appointments reunite the team that successfully delivered upgrade works to Western Ferries’ terminals in 2006/07.

This latest investment will maintain and improve on the operational flexibility of having two berthing structures at McInroy’s Point. Once completed, the upgraded berthing facilities will be better able to accommodate tidal variations and changeable weather conditions, enhancing reliability and overall resilience of the service.

Work is scheduled for completion in late autumn and has been planned to ensure there will be no disruption to services throughout the construction period.

Gordon Ross, managing director of Western Ferries, said: “Our continuing reinvestment is focused on ensuring that Western Ferries provides the most frequent, reliable and robust ferry service possible for the Cowal and Inverclyde communities and for the 1.3 million passengers and 650,000 vehicles we safely transport every year.

“This £2.5million investment is a clear statement of our confidence in the company and in our employees. It also represents the next step in future-proofing our business and service provision.”

Neil Doherty, director of George Leslie Ltd, said: “We are delighted to once again be working with Western Ferries and Arch Henderson on the further upgrading of berthing facilities at McInroy’s Point.”
