A MAN allegedly armed with a knife and a hammer confronted police called to a disturbance in Greenock.

Officers responded to the incident in a common close at Nelson Street just after 11pm on Friday.

It’s alleged there was a violent struggle between an aggressive male and officers.

A 50-year-old man was arrested and held in custody for court.

Area commander Chief Inspector Paul Cameron said: “It is unacceptable behaviour for anyone to possess an offensive weapon in a public place without lawful authority or reasonable excuse.

“The officers who attended this call did so to protect members of the public.

“To then be assaulted is appalling and shows the bravery and dedication of our local officers to protect our community.”
