Inverclyde Now Logo TRAFFIC/Pedestrian Lights For Waterfront/Tesco Junction In Greenock

TRAFFIC lights — including a pedestrian crossing phase — are to be installed at a busy Greenock town centre junction.

The improvements will be made on Container Way at Custom House Way, beside Tesco, the main intersection for vehicles and pedestrians heading to the waterfront leisure centre, cinema, bingo hall and riverfront.

More than 5,000 people supported an online petition calling for a pedestrian crossing on Container Way following the death of a 54-year-old man struck by a car there in December 2017.

An Inverclyde Council report states that £225,000 is being provided by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport towards traffic lights. The funding is due to be spent some time in the next 12 months.

The site is also set to become one of the main routes to the town centre for cruise ship passengers and crew when a new terminal building and visitor attraction is built at the waterfront.

The report states: “The proposed signalised junction, including a pedestrian phase, on Container Way will improve road safety and pedestrian safety.
