NEARLY 200 vehicles were stopped in Inverclyde during a crackdown on illegal activity by police and other agencies.

Officers from the Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Road Policing Unit along with partners from HMRC (HM Revenue and Customs), Inverclyde Trading Standards and Taxi enforcement departments carried out road checks within the Greenock area on Tuesday.

They stopped 182 vehicles which resulted in two people being reported to the procurator fiscal for driving with no insurance, two people reported for driving with no licence and three people reported for not wearing seatbelts.

Three vehicles were put off the road with immediate effect because of their poor condition and another 12 people were reported for further road traffic matters.

Eight taxi drivers were issued with tickets for a range of licensing offences whilst officers from HMRC and Trading Standards identified more than 30 people who will be the subject of further enquiries.

Inspector Gillian Gardner of Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Road Policing Department said: “This operation is an excellent example of partnership working, highlighting offences that motorists may not often be aware of. Police Scotland Officers will continue to work with partners in HMRC and Inverclyde Council as well as other agencies to help keep our roads safe and help reduce illegal activity.”
