GOLF -- Seniors' Open Competition At Gourock

Club Captain Bill Hawthorne with Billy Stevenson, left, and Stuart Rafferty

THE Seniors' Open competition hosted by Gourock Golf Club attracted 73 players, with nearly one third of them visitors to the course.

The challenging summer weather meant the course was playing its full 6,408 yards and, as a result, favouring the long hitters.

Alan Wylie from Greenock posted a strong gross score of 78 less 9 for a pace-setting nett 69, only to be pipped by home player Billy Stevenson who also shot 69 but took the handicap prize under the better inward half rule. On the outward nine Billy had posted a score of 44 despite a double bogey 7 at the tricky 8th hole which was one under his handicap and then he proceeded to accumulate an impressive combination of 4 pars and 5 bogeys on the back nine which was three under his handicap. This was a great nett round of 69 from Billy.

In the Scratch section, the ever steady home player Stuart Rafferty started with a birdie 4 at the first and turned at the 9th only one over par. At the start of the back nine, Stuart dropped a couple of shots on 10 and 12 but steadied himself over the last six holes to close out on 40 giving him a gross 77 which was enough to take the scratch first prize also from Alan Wylie by a single shot.
