GOLF -- Inverclyde Champion of Champions Events

Jim Duncan, Greenock Golf Club Captain, with Junior Champion of Champions Jamie Sinnamon and runner-up Kenan Ingram

GREENOCK Golf Club was the host for this year’s Inverclyde Golf Champion of Champions events which were held over the course of the summer season.

The events feature the lady, gent, junior and veteran champions from the four golf clubs in the Inverclyde Golf association with the clubs taking it in turns to host them.

The final of the Ladies' Champion of Champions competition was contested between Maureen Woodhead of Gourock Golf Club and Dorothy Fisher of Greenock Golf Club with home advantage for Dorothy just edging the competitive contest at the first extra hole.

The Club Champions event was contested by Steven Higgins (Gourock G.C.) and Michael McLennan (Whinhill G.C.) over 18 holes in matchplay (scratch) format. Both players played some good golf with Steven just pulling away on the back nine and edging victory by the score of 3&2 for his third win in this event in the past six years.

The Junior Champions event was contested by Jack Currie (Greenock G.C.), Kenan Ingram (Port Glasgow G.C.) and Jamie Sinnamon (Whinhill G.C.) with Niall Gallacher (Gourock G.C.) unfortunately being unable to compete due to an injury sustained the day before the event.

The revised format for the three competitors was strokeplay (scratch) in the morning with the two best scratch scores advancing to the matchplay (scratch) afternoon final. All three boys played some decent golf in the morning with Kenan returning a scratch score of 74 -- four shots clear of Jamie with Jack a further shot back, meaning it would be Jamie and Kenan advancing to the final.

In the final, Kenan reached the turn leading by one hole, however some misfortune for Kenan combined with some solid play from Jamie on the back nine saw Jamie clinch the match on the 17th green by the score of 2&1 to be crowned the Inverclyde Junior Champion of Champions for the second year running.

The Veterans' title is decided by an 18-hole strokeplay round (with the best nett score being declared the winner) and was contested between David MacFarlane (Greenock G.C.) playing off of a handicap of 1 and Jim Paterson (Port Glasgow G.C.) playing off of a handicap of 14.

Conditions were difficult with a strong breeze on the front nine, which impacted both player’s scores, however David’s home course knowledge enabled him to narrow the gap in handicaps by nine shots after the front nine. The back nine holes saw some much-improved play from David combined with some struggles on the greens for Jim, resulting in an overall win for David by eight shots.

Inverclyde Golf  thank Club Captain Jim Duncan and all at Greenock Golf Club for hosting this year’s

events on a golf course presented in excellent condition throughout the season, despite the very wet weather.

The events were blessed with some excellent golf by some great golfers, young and old. All matches were played in a great sporting manner with mutual respect between all competitors evident. Organisers congratulate Dorothy, Steven, Jamie and David and all who took part in the competitions. All champions were tremendous ambassadors for their golf clubs.
