AMERICAN Football -- First Match For Inverclyde Goliaths

INVERCLYDE'S new senior American football team played its first competitive game.

Inverclyde Goliaths visited Dundee Hurricanes on Sunday 8 October for the match. The Goliaths travelled had a depleted squad of 25 players becuase of adminstration issues relating to registration and transferring of players to the team.  Added to this, the team’s new uniform had not arrived, so borrowed uniforms were thrown together for this first outing.

These setbacks did not stop the Goliaths performing on the field in what was a low-scoring game, finishing 6-4 in the Inverclyde team's favour. The defence did not give up any scores, stuffing the majority of the Hurricanes's running game from the first whistle until the last.

The defence was made up of a high number of rookies, finding their feet and enjoying the sport they are learning to play. The offence stuttered on numerous occasions throughout the day, with a second quarter touchdown called back for offensive holding. There were numerous visits to the red zone which the team were unable to convert to scoring plays.

The Goliaths's only touchdown came from the first drive in the third quarter, a passing play to the front corner of the endzone. The attempt at the extra point was intercepted by the Hurricanes and returned to the Goliaths's endzone, leaving the score at 6-2.

Both defences held firm, and late in the fourth quarter, with the Goliaths backed up on their own three-yard line, with 30 seconds of play remaining, the decision was taken to give away a safety whilst running the clock out -- making the score 6-4.

The Goliaths punted to the Hurricanes who ultimately didn't have enough time on the clock to mount their comeback. This was a fantastic first win for the Goliaths with a lot of learning taken from the game.

The next game is against the UWS Pyros on 21 October with further fixtures away to Highland Stags on 29 October at 1pm; home to Dundee Hurricanes on 11 November at 1pm; home to Highland Stags on 18 November at 1pm; and home to Glasgow Tigers on 25 November at 1pm.
