Inverclyde Now Logo SKELMORLIE To Largs Coast Road Closing For Two Weekends

THE coast road between Skelmorlie and Largs is due to be closed over two weekends in April for major roadworks.

Scotland TranServ, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is proposing to resurface a 2.5-kilometre stretch of the A78 at Ashcraig House.

The complete closures will mean a lengthy diversion but are required because of the nature of the road and to protect the health and safety of workers and the travelling public.

Works are currently proposed over the following times:

– 8pm on Friday 5 April to 6am on Monday 8 April

— 8pm on Friday 12 April to 6am on Monday 15 April

To reduce the impact on communities, access to narrow country back routes Routenburn Road and Loch Thom Road will be restricted to local access only.

Jonathan Dyer, Scotland TranServ project design lead, said: “We have been working in consultation with local community councils and emergency services to schedule these works for a time of minimal disruption. Scotland TranServ is proposing to combine two resurfacing schemes into one to further reduce the impact.

“The proposed resurfacing scheme is being scheduled ahead of the busy Easter holiday period, and in advance of the summer season. This is a lengthy resurfacing programme, and therefore will require closure of the A78 over two weekends.”

Alan Murray, Scotland TranServ’s principal roads design engineer, added: “This is an important trunk road connecting a number of communities across North Ayrshire and Inverclyde. We will have additional plant and materials in place to mitigate against any unforeseen delays. The signed diversion route has been implemented on previous schemes on the A78. It will add significant time to journeys in the area, and therefore we would ask drivers to plan accordingly.”
