FERGUSON Marine shipyard in Port Glasgow has welcomed eight new apprentices for its 2025 intake.

They will gain valuable on-the-job training through on-site placements over the next two years, as well as attending West College Scotland, as they work towards engineering, fabrication and welding qualifications.

Frances Rice, apprentice co-ordinator at Ferguson Marine, said: “It’s brilliant to see the next cohort of apprentices beginning their careers with us. We received an impressive number of applicants for our 2025 programme, which shows how important it is to create opportunities for young people.

“It’s a great start to build long-term careers while also playing a key role in shaping the future of industries like shipbuilding. At Ferguson Marine, we support individuals at early stages of their careers and help them develop skills and experience they need to succeed.”

All eight apprentices are local to the area, strengthening Ferguson Marine’s focus on investing in and developing shipbuilding skills in Inverclyde.

One of the new apprentice welders, Adam Watt, said: “It’s a big step for me after school. I’ve always wanted to pursue a career in shipbuilding, and this feels like an exciting opportunity to learn more about the profession and gain experience in a real workplace.

“It’s great to work and study in my local area, and it’s been nice meeting the other apprentices and starting together.”
