FERRY operator CalMac will be carrying out an operation at Inchgreen, Greenock to de-gas MV Glen Sannox’s fuel system.
A flare (a controlled combustion of gas) will be visible during the removal of vapour from the vessel.
CalMac is reassuring the public that this is a normal part of the process and will be closely managed.
The operation, which starts tomorrow (Thursday) has been carefully planned with external stakeholders including Inverclyde Council, the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, the NHS, and the emergency services.

De-gassing will involve methane vapour being removed from the storage tank and flared off. This will allow safe access to the LNG system, which requires maintenance during Glen Sannox’s annual overhaul.
This is the first de-gassing carried out by CalMac, so a definitive timescale is not known. However, it is estimated that it will take up to 48 hours to complete, and the vessel will then begin the journey to dry dock in Birkenhead for planned annual maintenance.
