INVERCLYDE Labour have selected their candidates for the Inverclyde North Ward at May’s council elections.

Sitting Councillor Jim Clocherty and first-time council candidate Francesca Brennan will fight the election for the party.

Both candidates live in the ward, which covers central and west Greenock.

Jim is the current depute leader of the council and convener of Inverclyde’s education and communities committee. He has represented Inverclyde North since 2007 and chairs the Greenock Town Centre Regeneration Forum.

Francesca is a teacher in a local primary school and stood as the Labour candidate for the Greenock and Inverclyde constituency at May’s Scottish Parliament Elections. She is the daughter of Labour Provost Martin Brennan, who is standing down at May’s Election.

Jim said: “I am looking forward to campaigning with Francesca to ensure we again return two Labour Councillors for Inverclyde North. It will be a tough challenge but we are up for the fight.”

Francesca said: “I am delighted to have been selected as one of the Labour candidates for Inverclyde North, the area where I live with my husband and two children.

“I really enjoyed being a candidate at May’s Holyrood elections and aim to bring the same energy and enthusiasm to my campaign to become a councillor.

“Watching my dad, Jim and the other Labour councillors over the past 15 years, I have seen the real difference they can make.

“As someone who cares passionately about Greenock and Inverclyde, I would love the chance to play a part in helping our communities recover from Covid and creating opportunities for all our citizens to have happy and fulfilling lives.”

Inverclyde Council Labour leader Stephen McCabe said: “Jim and Francesca make a great team for Labour in Inverclyde North. While I am sad that Provost Brennan has decided to stand down we have a very able replacement in Francesca. I’m sure Martin will be very proud that she has been selected as a Labour candidate for the same ward. ”

Labour have also announced that their candidate for Gourock (Inverclyde West) is Martin McCluskey.
