PLANS Drawn Up For New Community Hub And Cafe

A PORT Glasgow charity has applied for permission to build a new community facility with cafe.

Parklea Branching Out want to create the hub at their base beside the Clyde.

The accommodation will include space to provide training and employability opportunities.

Parklea Branching Out uses horticulture to provide training, work experience, supported employment, and recreational and social facilities for a variety of people, including young people and adults with additional support needs.

The organisation was awarded more than £1million towards the project from the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund last year.

A design document submitted with the application states: “The proposal aims to provide a visually bold building, a focal point to the site which currently lacks a clear route and public destination.

“The building seeks to further the aims of the client, to maximise their capacity to continue to use horticulture as a vehicle for teaching.

“The proposed building sits upon a raised plinth, which minimises flood risk due to the proximity to the River Clyde. The advantage of the building’s raised position, is that views out across the river and surrounding landscape are maximised.

“The sloping paths up to the building provide formal routes for visitors to follow to and through the site and assist to improve wayfinding.

“The gridded layout of columns proposed throughout the cafe space and community room, takes inspiration from the visible remnants of the historic timber ponds protruding from the river mudflats adjacent to the site.”

The proposal is pending consideration by Inverclyde planners.
