Inverclyde Now Logo TWO Greenock Parkrunners Celebrate 50th Milestone

24 April, 2017 | Sport

IN perfect conditions, Greenock parkrun welcomed 96 runners to the Esplanade, including eight first-timers.

Out of the returning runners, an impressive 22 improved on their best times over the five-kilometre course.

Two 50 milestones were celebrated, with two parkrunners who have completed all 50 of their runs at Greenock.

Andrew Osborne first came to parkrun in November 2014.

Marianne McKay first came along on the second run in May 2014.

Young and old celebrated personal bests (PBs). Marianne’s five-year-old daughter Aimee was among the PB stars, taking an impressive 16 seconds off her best time. Aimee is looking forward to completing her 10th parkrun next week, joining the first club for junior parkrunners.

Steven Watson, left, and James McFadden

Cathy Craig broke through 30 minutes, taking more than five minutes off her best time. Fiona MacFarlane and Cheryl Thomas went sub-24, Mark McGhee went under 23, Gordon Ritchie broke 22 and James McFadden burst under 20 minutes for the first time.

Liam Kane, and Aimee McEleny

Yvonne McLaughlin and Gillian Boyle both took more than a minute off their times and Melissa Wilson was so close with a 59-second improvement; her third PB in a row. Young Liam Kane ran well to take 34 seconds off his best time while 65-year-old Margaret Mary McEleny was delighted to bring her time down to 27:34 after initially doubting she would ever make it under 28 minutes.

Steven Watson brought his time down to 18:18, giving him a new overall five-kilometre PB. Paul Symington improved his time as did David Tamburini, Catherine Stewart, David Jenkins, David Holmes, Neil Egan, David McDiarmid, and Sharon Taitt. Newcomer Mhairi McPherson improved on the time of her first parkrun last week.

Greenock parkrun was delighted to see Jim Sheridan return. Jim was a regular at Greenock parkrun when it first started, however, because of illness, was unable to take part for some time. It was great to see him back two weeks ago, and again this week.
